| Conference Title | G5 - Successfully Implementing a Decentralized Graduate Admissions Process |
| Moderator/Presenter | Presenter: Heather Kelly, Director of Student Services, School of Graduate Studies, University of Toronto Moderator: Rosemary Springett, Scholarships and Records Officer, Wilfrid Laurier University |
| Abstract | The admission of graduate students at the University of Toronto is a decentralized process. Applicants apply directly to the program of interest via an online graduate admissions system and admission decisions are made locally. The School of Graduate Studies serves a valuable coordinating function and is engaged in graduate admissions policy and planning issues as well as technology-based innovations. This session will provide an overview of our decentralized graduate admissions process including the advantages and challenges such an approach presents for our work as well as the impact on faculty, students, and administration. The session will address specific steps in the process such as the establishment of central admission policies & procedures, the training and support of departmental graduate admissions staff, as well as the development of a detailed audit process to ensure compliance with institutional admission standards. Administrators who are interested in implementing a decentralized admission process will find this session particularly helpful. |
